Disarming our Hearts: Becoming Peace
Disarming Our Hearts: Becoming Peace
At the heart of the mission of the Peace & Spirituality Center is the belief that peace begins within. Disarming Our Hearts: Becoming Peace is an ongoing initiative that invites us to explore how we cultivate inner peace and bring it into the world — becoming contemplative critics, prophetic risktakers, and radical reconcilers in our daily lives.
Through diverse perspectives—spirituality, science, dialogue, and action—this series engages with the principles of nonviolence, healing, and justice. Each presentation, workshop, retreat, and resource is intentionally shaped to help us grow as one of these three: contemplative critics who see the world through the Heart of God and respond thoughtfully to injustice; prophetic risktakers who act and speak with courageous, hope-filled conviction; or radical reconcilers who work toward healing and right relationship without ignoring harm.
What to Expect:
Each offering in the series brings a different perspective to the work of becoming peace. Presenters come from diverse backgrounds and areas of experience, inviting us to consider peace through the lenses of spirituality, relationships, justice, nonviolence, healing, dialogue, and our shared life in community. Participants may be invited to explore themes such as:
Cultivating compassion and empathy.
Speaking and acting with grounded, prayerful courage.
Practicing nonviolence in daily life.
Working for justice while fostering reconciliation.
Healing and transforming our relationships and communities.
There is no single way to become peace. Sometimes the invitation is to pause and look inward; sometimes it is to listen differently, enter into a difficult conversation, repair a relationship, challenge an injustice, or take action.
Whether through presentations, workshops, retreats, digital resources, or personal reflection, each offering provides another opportunity to practice this lifelong work. You are welcome to enter the journey wherever you are.
More from Disarming Our Hearts
Disarming Our Hearts: Becoming Peace extends beyond our in-person programs. Through our digital ministry, you can continue the journey wherever you are, at your own pace. Explore reflections, prayers, videos, simple practices, and other resources created to help us examine what we carry within, deepen our capacity for peace, and bring that peace into our relationships, communities, and world.
Some resources invite just a few minutes of reflection; others offer opportunities to go deeper. You might find a prayer for a particular moment, a practice to carry into your week, a question that challenges you to look at something differently, or a resource to return to again and again. New offerings are added throughout the year, so there is always another way to continue the journey.
You can also become part of the Disarming Our Hearts Circle, a community connected by this shared commitment to becoming peace. Circle members receive monthly resources for reflection, prayer, learning, and practice—small invitations to keep this work present in everyday life.
Whether you join us at the Center or engage from home, Disarming Our Hearts is an invitation to keep learning, practicing, questioning, and growing.

Why It Matters
Disarming our hearts is about more than personal reflection; it calls us to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with God in ways that transform both our personal lives and our shared world. In a time marked by division and disregard, this series offers space to examine how we can uproot violence from within and live with compassion, courage, and integrity.
