Meet Olive, Our Peace Dove
One morning, as the light stretched softly across the grounds of St. Mary-on-the-Lake, something unusual appeared. Near the entrance, resting gently on a single green leaf, was a small dove.
She was not made of feathers, but of soft thread—crocheted by hand, simple and gentle. It looked as though she had been placed there... yet no one had seen who brought her.
Some began to wonder.
Some wondered if one of the deer had brought her. After all, they wander these grounds every day, moving so quietly through the trees that they often seem to know this place better than anyone. And sometimes—just sometimes—they seem to know exactly what is needed.
A sister found her first. She bent down, picked up the little dove, and held her for a moment. There was no note. No instructions. No explanation.
And yet... something felt different.
Not as if everything had changed, but as if something had softened. As though a small gift had quietly found its way home.
The little dove had come to stay.
And she was given a name:
Olive.
And before long, Olive began to move.
From one person to another. From one room to the next. From one quiet moment to another. Wherever she went, she seemed to notice the little things others often overlooked.
A question waiting to be asked. A story waiting to be told. A surprising discovery. A quiet act of kindness.
A moment of wonder hidden in an ordinary day.
Olive doesn't pretend to have all the answers, and she certainly doesn't come to fix everything. The work of peace remains what it has always been—real, important, and sometimes difficult. But Olive believes that becoming peace often begins by paying closer attention.
To one another. To ourselves. To the world around us.
Because when we slow down long enough to notice, we often discover that peace has been quietly waiting for us all along.
If Olive finds her way to you, let her stay for a while. Listen to the question she's asking, smile at the discovery she's eager to share, or simply enjoy seeing the world through her curious little eyes. Then, when you're ready, pass her along. After all, the best discoveries are the ones we share.
Why Olive?
Olive believes something very simple: Wonder changes the way we see the world.
Sometimes peace doesn't begin with having all the answers.
Sometimes it begins by noticing something we had overlooked.
A surprising fact.
A thoughtful question.
A new perspective.
A small act of kindness.
The science behind awe.
The history of a simple tradition.
The wisdom hidden in ordinary moments.
Olive loves discovering these little things—and sharing them with anyone willing to pause for a minute and wonder. Because curiosity has a way of opening our hearts. And open hearts are often where peace begins.
Where Can You Find Olive?
Olive is always discovering something.
Sometimes you'll meet her at the Center, quietly waiting to greet someone new.
Sometimes she'll pop up on social media with a question she can't stop thinking about, a fascinating discovery, or something she noticed that others might have walked right past.
Sometimes she'll simply invite you to pause, look a little closer, or see the ordinary in a new way.
If you meet Olive at the Center, you're always welcome to spend a few moments with her, take a photo, and pick up one of her little cards. Each card carries a simple thought, question, or invitation—something to keep, reflect on, or pass along to someone else who might need it.
In that way, Olive keeps moving. Not only from place to place, but from one person to another, carrying curiosity, kindness, and small reminders that peace often begins by paying attention.
Part Of Our Ministry
Olive is not a separate project or a passing idea. She is part of the life of the Peace & Spirituality Center—a small expression of the same mission we carry in all we do: to foster peace through dignity, compassion, and presence.
Olive reminds us that becoming peace doesn't always begin with changing the world.
Sometimes it begins with paying closer attention to it.
So, she'll keep looking.
She hopes you'll look with her.
